I'm not dumb, I just have a command of thoroughly useless information. -- Calvin, The Days Are Just Packed

Looking for roommates for Botcon 2013! Note me for details

Happy New Year, DA.  :)

Welp, looks like the new year is trying to start off, not with a bang, but with a whimper on my end.  In less than twenty-four hours I've managed to lose one of my flash drives (with the latest chapter of Glory and Honor, my partial draft of the Chromus Rift, and other writing on it), took a spill outside that's left my hips and butt sore, and to top it all off Jazz is giving me problems again.  In the middle of doing my morning routine of checking e-mail and DA and Facebook messages it decides to go black-screen on me and give me a "Beginning Dump of Physical Memory" message.  Ack.  :ohnoes:

Luckily, I looked up "dump of physical memory" and it doesn't appear to mean that my laptop is trying to wipe its own memory (I don't think anyhow).  But the information I'm getting online is contradictory and confusing.  Some sources say it's dust in the computer, others say it's a registry error, still others say it's a problem with hardware failing or having errors.  Blargh.

Guess it's a good thing I got an external hard drive for Christmas.  Going to back up my stuff, then sometime soon take Jazz in to our local computer repair guys and see what they can do.  I'd rather let an expert deal with this than try it myself and muck something up beyond repair.

My New Year's Eve was fairly boring.  My mom and her friend went to a dance, and my brother and his friend went to our church's youth party.  So it was just me and the animals home alone for the evening.  I ended up just watching My Little Pony and trying to comfort Chi Chi when fireworks started going off outside and freaking him out.

As for plans for 2013?  Well... don't know if I have a New Year's Resolution, really.  I did manage to meet last year's resolution of getting a healthy start on my original novel... I guess this year's will be to finish it?  I'm sure my flash drive will turn up soon, and if it doesn't, I have another copy of it on my computer (and will soon have a third on my external HD once I get it installed and working).  And once it's finished, the "fun" part will begin -- revising, editing, getting people to proofread it for me, and otherwise polishing it for publication.

Then from there it's off to research my next step.  A lot of published authors I've talked to try to talk me into going the self-publishing route, but I dunno how well I'd be able to market my own book -- I'm not an aggressive sales-person.  I may try the traditional route, then go self-publishing if that fails.  We'll see, I guess.

If all else fails, Amazon.com has a publish-on-demand feature, and lets the author set the price of the book.  That's one option, at least.

Still looking for BotCon roomies -- I have one lined up but wouldn't mind a few more.  Ping me if you're thinking about going and need a room!

Have a new journal feature before I go.  Yay, Cossie...

Oh my gosh! What an icky start to the new year! I hope your soreness is gone by now and you're able to find your flash drive soon. I would check in, around, and under ever place you take it and perhaps any place you would least likely take it on the chance maybe you absent-mindedly took into somewhere else. (I have found car keys in the fridge and almost took the house phone to a Christmas party so yeah...)

Been looking around, both at work and at home. Even looked in my car on the off chance that it fell out of my pocket. Thankfully I have a backup copy of Chromus Rift and can recover the other missing writing from other sources. About the only thing lost "forever" is my books-to-read list. Still very annoying, though...

Why does it seem like I'm the only one whose lucky number is 13? :ohnoes: It seems like everyone else is having a terrible new year. I hope things start looking up for you soon. I think I'd have a conniption fit if I lost a flash drive with that much writing on it. *Rubs computer screen with hands to try to get some of the good luck to rub off for you* =D

I'm not going to judge the entire year by the first day, so hopefully things'll look up later on. And I have a backup of my novel (two backups now that I have an external HD copy) and know how to get ahold of copies of some of the other "missing" writing. About the only thing that's gone for good is my "books to read" list... ah well.

I keep all my writing backed up on a flashdrive (which is shaped like a penguin), but I tend to use my amazon wish list as my "books to read" list. My obsessive love of books means it's a bit long, but at least it can't get deleted. :XD: On the good side, I just realized I can take one off. I picked up The Strange Case of Origami Yoda the other day as per your recommendation and I'm going to start it soon. =D The Star Wars nerd in me couldn't resist.

You're not the only one getting off to a rough start. Everyone in my house (including me) has the flu. ^^;

I hope so too; we've all missed at least two days of work; can't miss any more. D:

Happy New Year to you too! Here's hoping you heal fast and the flash drive reappears from whatever dark corner it crawled into. :)

As far as Jazz - if the system crashes under certain conditions, it will 'dump' all contents of memory (the RAM) to a location on your hard drive. If you know what you're doing, you can take a look at those files and figure out what caused the crash. It takes a fair amount of expertise to be able to actually make use of those files, though.

Any of those internet responses could be right - if all you got was the black screen and didn't catch the error codes, it would be very hard to track down. If you do happen to get more info, feel free to shoot it my way. I might at least be able to translate for you, or maybe even tell you what's wrong. :)

The soreness from the fall has gone away, and I'm beginning to think I left my flash drive at work. We'll see, I guess, when I go back to work tomorrow.

I'm probably going to end up taking it to a repair place a friend recommended. I'd rather have a pro look at it than muck it up trying to fix it myself.
